I'm making a new commitment to health and wellness, of all varieties. And for me, this means with what I eat, how I spend my leisurely time, and what I'm doing to make myself feel good. You can call it vain, but for me health is the whole package and I'm trying to take care of myself in every aspect --that is important to me. (Because if I don't take care of myself, then who will? The answer is no one) And I've heard all sorts of things lately about coconut oil, so I decided to do some Googling and see what I could learn.
I found this brief but informative link from Dr. Oz (who generally I don't take super seriously because to me, doctors and TV don't go hand in hand *cough* Dr. Phil *cough*) to give me a foundation to start from. So I dug some more. Then I found this from Wellness Mama and while 101 uses is a little absurd and totally not what I was looking for, I thought okay, it's game time now. I've heard of people using coconut oil for their hair, and since it's been 6 months since I've had my hair cut and my split ends are out of control (don't worry friends, I'm seeing my gal Emily on Saturday), I wanted to use it in my hair.
So then I found the most credible news source of them all, a Wiki page about using coconut oil for your skin and hair. Presto! Game on. I read it and then made a run to the grocery to grab a couple of things (it wasn't JUST for the coconut oil y'all) and made some magic happen. I followed the instructions on the site and of course, made a HUGE mess (it looked like I had candle wax all over the counter) and wrapped my hair up so elegantly in a purple shower cap and hung out for a couple of hours.
I cooked. I watched TV. I talked on the phone. I got distracted by the smell (not because it was bad, but because the smell from my hair and what I was cooking did not go hand in hand). I stayed in my condo, mind you, there was no way I was going to go outside looking like the mess I was. Then after 3 hours, it was time (for me) to wash this nonsense out of my hair. It took 3 shampoos to get the greasy feeling out of my hair, and then I conditioned (I know it sounds redundant after having coconut oil in my hair, but remember, the split ends in my hair are the length of my arm right now, so totally necessary). I let my hair air dry (because I do this whenever I have the chance- too much heat for your hair is just no bueno) most of the way and went to bed. I woke up the next morning excited to see how my hair looked and felt.
The results? My split ends aren't as obvious as I walk down the street, but otherwise I feel no different. I checked in with another friend who uses it and she thought maybe it was because my hair is natural (read: no colored in any way), so it may not be as damaged as some. I wondered if it was because I only left the stuff on for 3 hours- some people do overnight treatments. I know one thing for sure- I will certainly be trying it again in the near future, because I have a huge jar of the stuff and only used 5 tablespoons of it for this little experiment of mine. (Let me know if you want to join in an all day coconut oil hair soaking party!)
Who knows where my next 'health' adventure will take me, but we'll find out soon enough I'm sure!
