Life Moves Pretty Fast...

' Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.' -Ferris Bueller

It's been just a little while. And by that, I mean it's been over a year. Wow. But I guess that's what happens when life happens.

So, I'm finally carving out some time (or times, if I'm being totally honest) to write. It's not for lack of wanting. But you know, priorities. Just a few things pull my time here and there these days. Work, husband, fur kids, human kid, friends, family... the list goes on.

Let me give you the down and dirty on what's been happening.

January 2016, in a visit to Patrick in Aspen, Colorado, we got stuck on a mountain pass. Literally.

We had to get mountain rescued off. This is one of those stories that is SO good in person to tell, and quite frankly, where people often think I'm making shit up because it's that crazy.

That same visit, we eloped! We knew we wanted to get married. Yes, we know that our relationship was unconventional in a lot of ways, but from the get-go things were beautiful and different. It felt right and was perfect for us. And yes, it's real.

I realize I'm pregnant! Holy smokes. Yep, you read that right. Pregnant. I'd felt different in a variety of ways, but still was shocked when I saw that line show up. We waited until Patrick was in Raleigh before we started telling folks in our lives; I really wanted to get through that first trimester (as many do) before sharing I was preggo.

Patrick moved to Raleigh in April 2016 (yep, I survived my first whole trimester without my husband). Moving him from Colorado to Raleigh while 12 weeks pregnant was not fun.

May 2016, Patrick and I moved into our first place together. Moving while pregnant is the worst. We'll leave it at that.

October 12, 2016, I gave birth to a baby boy! Owen. Cutest kid ever. Seriously.

He gave me a run for my money during my last trimester and during his delivery. Another one of those stories that is SO good to tell in person and with people thinking I'm exaggerating. Y'all-truth is stranger than fiction. But he came out healthy and wonderful and holy smokes I'm a mother to a human.

During all of this, I've stepped up and back in leadership positions at lululemon. Working at lu has brought so many amazing things into my life. Wonderful people and experiences. I can't imagine being with a better company. So damn lucky. Sometimes it's hard to find the words.

Oh yeah, and our fur family grew. In July we found a little black kitten outside of our home. So we welcomed Bjorn Batman into our family. I'll give you one guess who named him.

So that's the super quick low down of the past year+. My life is amazing. Beautiful, full, crazy. I love my life and my crazy, not so little family. Owen is an incredible baby. Most of my life I said I never wanted to be married or be a mom. And when I stopped to reflect on what I really wanted in my life, I realized I, in fact, wanted these things. So badly. So badly I denied ever wanting them so I wouldn't be disappointed if they didn't happen. But I never could have imagined what joy these two things could bring to my life.

Patrick and I made the decision early in my pregnancy to keep it off of social media. We weren't trying to keep my pregnancy a secret. (Which I think keeping it off social media and keeping it secret became confusing for some... believe it or not, things can happen offline and still be real). We decided we wanted to keep our life together more private. Especially after some reactions to our marriage. For real, commenting on my Facebook saying 'Wait, is this a joke?' when I updated my relationship status to married? Unnecessary. Typing that sentence even felt gross. And ridiculous. (I'm in a hate relationship with social media right now). So in thinking about that, and wanting to keep our little one safe, we decided our baby (we didn't know if we were having a boy or a girl) didn't belong on the internet, in or out of the womb. Owen can make the decision when he's ready to have his pictures online.

So that brings us to now. I'm recommitting to blogging and figured before I get into too many of the things I truly want to write about, I needed to do some catching up first. So get ready for lots of new blogs and takes on life. From social media, to motherhood, to health and wellness, to relationships and much much more. I realize my desire to blog and keep my life more private may be a bit contradictory, but we'll figure it out as we go.

Because why the hell not?

Why I'm Leaving Higher Education

If you thought you read that statement incorrectly, it should say 'why I'm leaving higher education.' Yep. It's true. The word is out, and so I've decided it's definitely time I write about some really important things that are happening in my life a little more publicly. Mostly because I am really excited about these changes, and partly because I feel there's a lot of judgment going on about my decisions and I'd like to clarify why I'm taking this path. For those who have not heard the news (which is probably most of you), I put in my resignation at NC State and will be joining the lululemon team. I will be working in the store and am excited about this opportunity. I have loved my past retail experiences. I love what lululemon stands for and their community engagement. I am not making this choice because I am desperate to get out of my current position or because it's the only job I could find. I am making this choice because I feel it's ...

Connect 4

Recently, I was out with a new friend out at a bar playing Connect 4. Remember that game? It was one of my favorites back in the day. Along with Guess Who, CandyLand and Clue. I've always loved playing games like that, but have never been one who's particularly competitive. I think in hindsight for me, it was about the time I was getting with the people, the laughing and the fun.  And that still carries through to who I am today. This same friend I'm talking about playing Connect 4 with also gave me one of the best and most intense compliments I've ever received in my life. He's on a tour across the country right now and he said that meeting me has been the best part of his trip. In disbelief, I asked how this could be true. He's traveling across the country, seeing so many things people don't have the opportunity to, including myself. I'm incredibly jealous of this journey he's on, so for me, I just can't fathom how I am even a blip on the rad...

The Color of Beets

When I mention a beet, it brings a very distinct color to mind, doesn't it? That bright reddy purple kind of color that convinces you its going to make your mouth that same color if you eat it. Well I've never had my mouth turn the color of a beet... but I'm pretty sure my face was that color today after my first day of half marathon training. Oh, and I was delightful pouring sweat too.  Folks, it was a struggle.  The whole time I'm negotiating with myself... here are a couple of samples of those conversations I had with me, myself and I. Oh sweet lord, this guy next to me smells like BO and cigarettes. Why did he pick the treadmill next to me? ( 5 minutes later when he's gone ) Wait, I still smell that smell... shit does that mean I'm the one who smells like that! I put on deodorant today and have been no where near a cigarette! What the hell! Okay, just stare at the TV and read about this guy who's being suspended for 2 games for physically assaultin...
